Learning Places Project

As part of Ulster University’s Learning Landscape Transition Management Project, my project ‘Learning Places’ encompasses a number of activities, which are investigating, documenting and promoting the effective use of learning spaces within Ulster University. These activities seek to contribute to the current sector discourses and ensure that Ulster University takes an active and informed approach to the integration of space, facilities and resources to support all learners. “Learning resources and spaces form the ‘support ecosystem’ of student learning, motivating and inspiring student communities in their continual educational development” (NUS, ‘Learning Resources Benchmarking Tool’)

One of the key activities I have been working on since August 2015 is the design and fitting of a pilot classroom to test the SCALE-UP (Student Centred Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies) on the Belfast campus. This approach to teaching large group teaching is being tested in the delivery of writing and critical awareness skills in art and design. Each week the entire Foundation cohort is taking part in sessions led by myself in this new Active Learning Studio. These sessions approach developing study skills, communication skills, building knowledge and understanding of Art, Design & Media disciplines in a challenging and interactive format.
